The Gold Route, Sheffield

The Gold Route includes public spaces at Sheaf Square, Howard Street, The Winter Gardens, Millennium Square, The Peace Gardens and Barkers Pool. Work on Howard Street has transformed it into a high quality, attractive route between Sheffield Station and the heart of the city centre.Part of a £50 million plus investment programme into Sheffield Station and its surroundings, the water feature symbolises Sheffield's industrial heritage, representing hot metal pouring from a furnace. The £5.8 million Barker's Pool scheme was funded by Yorkshire Forward, Objective 1, Section 106, private sector contributions and Sheffield City Council's own resources and work began in October 2004.

Millennium Square acts as a direct link between two of Sheffield's most popular public spaces, the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden. Set in the paving are dozens of LED lights giving the space a sparkle at night. In addition nine large Sheffield stainless steel spheres varying in sizes up to 2m in diameter are located throughout the space. "Rain" is the name for the square's public art, which, like raindrops, are "scattered" over the square each resting in their own shallow pool of water. It now provides an elegant setting for the beautifully-restored City Hall and an area that local residents can be justifiably proud to call their own. The City Hall was also commended by RIBA, scooping the Conservation Award.
